In 2011 Shane Orchard started Splitfest at Temple Basin. In 2019 Tess Carney, Shane's long time mountaineering partner and splitfest volunteer, took over the festival. The aim has always been to create a learning environment for people who want to try splitboarding and to inspire adventure. Each year splitboarders from all over the world converge at the backcountry mecca of Temple Basin to shred together at this magnificent location.
Temple Basin Ski Club was established in 1929 with the aim of getting more people into the mountains on skis. The modern Temple Basin lodge is the base for skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering and splitboarding! For more information visit http://www.templebasin.co.nz/about-temple/history/
